New Eibsee aerial cableway – Germany’s highest construction site
The Eibsee cableway construction site is Germany’s highest construction site this year. Work is progressing at full speed so that the “Seilbahn Zugspitze” project can be brought to a close in December as planned.
Helicopters deliver material to the site, the crane is 25 meters higher than the peak of the Zugspitze mountain. Work also continued through the winter – with wind, freezing temperatures and even at the weekend. They were rewarded with amazing views from the highest point in Germany.
Work is planned to continue through to the end of the year. The new Eibsee cableway, costing EUR 50 million, and which will then be called “Seilbahn Zugspitze” is scheduled to open on 21 December 2017. This will not only bring up to 120 people up the mountain every 15 minutes, but will also offer passengers a more comfortable ride on their way to the Zugspitze and back down.
This is due to factors including the new cabins which give the cableway a classy look and will offer excellent views with their floor-length heated windows. This ambitious project is already held in high esteem around the world.
New Zugspitze cableway triples capacity
There are excellent reasons for this, as the “Seilbahn Zugspitze” is unique thanks to three features: It has the world’s highest cableway support, it covers a difference of almost 2,000m in height, and there is also the longest free span for a single section.
However, for guests the most interesting feature is that the former waiting times are now a thing of the past. Transport capacity has been tripled, in order to meet the requirements of the 500,000 visitors to the Zugspitze each year.
Old Eibsee cableway to be turned off in April
An important notice for holiday makers: The old Eibsee cableway will be turned off on 3 April 2017, after having been in operation for 54 years.
In the transitional period through to December, the most comfortable way to the Zugspitze from Grainau is via the rack-and-pinion railway and the glacier cableway. A new, additional mountain locomotive has been bought by Bayerische Zugspitzbahn for this purpose. The trains will travel from Eibsee to the Zugspitzplatt every 30 minutes starting in the spring.
Please note that it will not be possible to transport people who have to rely on wheelchairs until the new “Seilbahn Zugspitze” opens.
